Run the talk yourself

The “Before You Walk Away” kit

Everything on this page exists so one talk does not stay one talk. If you can read aloud and hold a room for twenty minutes, you can run “Before You Walk Away” at your temple youth group, bala vihar, culture club, or your own living room.

What it is

A twenty-minute talk for young people who would rather be anywhere else, and for the parents watching them scroll. It starts with superheroes and algorithms, not scripture, and it ends with an open argument, because the arguing is the tradition. No belief is required of anyone in the room.

What a room needs

A speaker who has read the script twice. Chairs. A phone or a projector if you want to show the games, and that is optional. Nothing to buy, nothing to sign, nobody's email collected.

The shape of the hour

Twenty minutes of talk. Ten minutes of argument, and the argument is not a risk to manage, it is the point. Then one small ask: open the phone, walk one night on the Night Road, tonight. The host's guide below has the minute-by-minute version.

The one rule

Nobody in the room gets told what to believe. The talk makes its case; the site behind it shows its sources and its doubts. If a young person leaves still uninterested but having argued well, the evening worked.
