A Note for Parents and Teachers on Sources

Every quotation in this handbook is referenced to a primary text. Any claim is checkable against the original. The primary texts are the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and the Puranas. A few honest cautions, in the scientific spirit of the book:

Advaita Vedanta is itself Shankara’s interpretation (bhashya) of the shruti. Other great teachers, Ramanuja and Madhva among them, read the same texts differently. The verses cited are common to the tradition. The non-dual framing is Shankara’s school, as requested.

Layers of authority are marked throughout. Upanishadic teachings are cited as shruti. The creation-and-lineage narratives, the lokas, and cosmic time are presented as the Puranic account. Chakras and kundalini are presented as the yoga shastra’s practice-map. The customs of Chapter 12 are sorted into evidence, design, and traditional explanation. Children taught these distinctions early will defend the tradition better, not worse.

Disputed texts are flagged. Works of doubtful or modern origin (e.g., the Vaimanika Shastra) are noted as such, and predictive astrology is distinguished from the genuine observational astronomy of Jyotisha. The undisputed core carries the weight of the book. This core is the Prasthana-trayi, meaning the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Gita, and the Vedas.

Modern voices are dated and framed. Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) is presented as a modern interpreter. His quotations are from the Complete Works, and his 19th-century scientific analogies are flagged as products of their era, a distinction he himself insisted on.

The story frame is a teaching device. Meera and her Thatha are fictional, standing in the tradition’s own oldest genre, teaching through dialogue, as the Upanishads do. Everything inside their story remains sourced, tiered, and checkable exactly as described in the notes above. This includes every scripture citation, historical claim, and scientific statement. Only the lamp and the granddaughter are invented, and even they have millions of real counterparts.
