Answer Key (for the curious — and for parents)
Many questions are reflections with no single “right” answer. Below are the factual answers.
Ch 1: Sanatana = eternal; dharma = that which upholds. “Hindu” came from outsiders naming the people beyond the river Sindhu. The foundation verse is Rig Veda 1.164.46.
Ch 2: Religion = outer; spirituality = inner. Q2: (b) apara vidya.
Ch 3: Layers: Samhitas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, Upanishads. Karma-kanda (Samhitas+Brahmanas) = materialistic/practical; Jnana-kanda (Aranyakas+Upanishads) = philosophical. Ayurveda=medicine, Dhanurveda=defence, Gandharvaveda=arts, Sthapatyaveda=architecture. “Vedanta” = the end of the Veda, where the Upanishads sit.
Ch 4: Mantra-drashta = “seer of the mantra”, truth discovered, not invented. Line: Brahma → rishis and Prajapatis → rishis wed Prajapatis’ daughters → humanity; hence rishis are our first grandfathers. Saptarishis: Vasishta, Vishvamitra, Atri, Jamadagni, Kashyapa, Bharadvaja, Gautama. Recent sages: Adi Shankara (unified Vedanta, four mathas); Ramana Maharshi (“Who am I?” inquiry).
Ch 5: Antahkarana: manas (feels/receives), buddhi (decides), chitta (memory), ahamkara (I-sense). Wealth example: being born rich may be karma; how the money is used is free will. Chariot: Self=rider, intellect=charioteer, mind=reins, senses=horses, body=chariot. Human birth is precious because free will lets the jiva turn to Paramatma.
Ch 6: Yajnavalkya ends at One (prana/Brahman), many powers, one source. In the body: Agni in speech, Vayu in breath, Surya in the eyes (Aitareya 1.2.4). Devathas can give knowledge/protection but cannot remove karma, only postpone its fruit. Fourteen lokas; Earth (Bhu-loka) in the middle.
Ch 7: Order: Self → space → air → fire → water → earth → plants → food → person (Taittiriya 2.1). 4 yugas = 1 Mahayuga; 71 Mahayugas = 1 Manvantara; 14 Manvantaras = 1 Kalpa (day of Brahma). Honest: the numbers are doctrine, not measurement; the true marvel is the scale of imagination.
Ch 8: Yoga = skill in action (2.50) and evenness of mind (2.48). Eight limbs: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi, ethics come first. Kundalini: the tradition’s coiled vital energy said to rise through the chakras; hold it as the yoga shastra’s practice-map, verified only by honest inner experiment.
Ch 9: Q2: False. The honest point is the scale of imagination, not calculation. Debate rule: the better-reasoned view is honestly accepted, like updating on evidence.
Ch 10: Resonances: observer/measurement, non-solid world, deep unity. “Observer” usually = any measuring device, so physics does not “prove” Vedanta. Rope-snake: the mistaken world of separateness superimposed on one reality.
Ch 11: Nirguna = without form; Saguna = with form. Gita 12.5: the formless is hard for embodied minds, so form gives a foothold. Four reasons: focus, sacred space, multi-sense memory, community.
Ch 12: Tiers: WELL-SUPPORTED (evidence), SENSIBLE DESIGN (practical wisdom), TRADITIONAL EXPLANATION (the tradition’s account). Asana: traditional = preserve rising energy from discharge; design = insulation, stable spine, practice-zone cue; supported = steady comfortable posture aids attention. Morning-light ritual = arghya-pradanam. Sleeping direction: earth’s field is far too weak for the magnetic account, the ritual-consistency benefit is the defensible one.
Ch 13: Five yagnas: Rishi (study/remembrance), Deva (worship), Pitru (ancestors), Bhuta (creatures), Manushya (fellow humans). Duties to rishis: remember them in the morning, offer water, read their books. The passage: Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11.
Ch 14: Anchors: Gita 2.48 (equanimity) and 2.47 (detachment).
Ch 15: Nachiketa refused wealth, kingdoms, and long life, keeping the question. Shreyas = the good/true; preyas = the pleasant/easy; the wise choose shreyas (Katha 1.2.2). Salt: dissolved yet tastable everywhere — the invisible essence pervades all — leading to “Tat tvam asi” (Chandogya 6.13, 6.8.7). Bhrigu: given a method (tapas), he proposed food, prana, mind, intellect, bliss, hypothesis, test, revision (Taittiriya 3). Mahavakyas: Prajnanam Brahma (Aitareya 3.3), Aham Brahmasmi (Brihadaranyaka 1.4.10), Tat Tvam Asi (Chandogya 6.8.7), Ayam Atma Brahma (Mandukya 2).
Ch 16: Setting: between two armies; Arjuna’s trembling, dry mouth, failing limbs (1.28–30). The teaching is for crisis. Paths: karma (the doer), bhakti (the lover), jnana (the thinker), dhyana/raja (the mystic). The two words: abhyasa (practice) and vairagya (dispassion) (6.35). 18.63: “Reflect on it fully — then do as you choose” — free, reasoned judgment as the final instruction.
Ch 17: The question: “Have you seen God?”, Ramakrishna answered from direct experience, then let himself be tested. Four yogas: karma/doer, bhakti/lover, raja/mystic, jnana/philosopher. “Realisation”: religious claims must be verified in one’s own experience, shravana, manana, nididhyasana with the third step never skipped. Service: daridra-narayana, serving the needy as worship; the Ramakrishna Mission as institutionalized Manushya Yagna.
Ch 18: “Many powers of one reality, our own Upanishad counts them down to One (Brihadaranyaka 3.9).” Conceding shows the goal is truth. The dharma is the shastra’s teaching; customs must answer to it and to compassion.
Ch 19: Purpose: live peacefully and purposefully, attain knowledge, and merge back into Brahman. Image: rivers merging into the ocean, leaving name and form behind (Mundaka 3.2.8). Steps: shravana, manana (the scientist’s step), nididhyasana.
Ch 20: Rishi remembrance + water = Rishi Yagna. The rule: gentle and consistent. Aum contains all (Mandukya 1).
Ch 1+: Svadharma: right action flowing from what a thing specifically is. The fire burns, the river flows (Gita 3.35). Ahimsa is the highest dharma because a tradition praying for all beings makes non-harming the default, strength restrained, not weakness.
Ch 2+: Adhikari-bheda: teaching graded to the student’s readiness — stories, ritual, philosophy, silence — so outsiders see every grade of one school at once and mistake it for many religions.
Ch 3+: Darshanas: Nyaya (logic), Vaisheshika (categories & atoms), Sankhya (the map of prakriti & purusha), Yoga (the method), Mimamsa (the sacred act), Vedanta (the summit). NASA story: internet legend, the documented wonder is Panini’s grammar itself.
Ch 4+: Rishikas: Lopamudra, Ghosha (also Vishvavara, Apala), hymns inside the Rig Veda. Bharadvaja: three lifetimes of study, three mountains remaining, knowledge is an ocean; humility is the stroke.
Ch 5+: Sanchita = the quiver (stored); prarabdha = the arrow in flight (this life’s givens); agami = the arrow on the string (now, mine to aim). Gunas: sattva clear, rajas stormy, tamas fog, weather, not personality.
Ch 6+: Nataraja: drum = creation, fire = dissolution, flame-ring = the dancing cosmos (samsara), raised foot = liberation, dwarf = ignorance subdued, abhaya hand = fear not. At CERN: a two-meter Nataraja, gifted 2004, chosen as the metaphor for the dance of matter.
Ch 7+: The honest Dashavatara sentence: ‘an ascending staircase of forms that happens to climb in the right order, a resonance to enjoy, not a proof to sell.’
Ch 8+: Pancha pranas: prana (intake), apana (release/grounding), samana (digestion/balance), udana (speech/effort/ascent), vyana (circulation, whole-body).
Ch 9+: Nalanda burned in invasion c. 12th century; institutions severed for centuries. The rebound: Ramanujan, Raman, Bose (and Mars orbit on the first attempt), interruption, not essence.
Ch 10+: The hard problem: mechanism explains function but not why experience accompanies it. Vedanta’s home ground because it made consciousness fundamental from the start, prajnanam brahma.
Ch 11+: Prana-pratishtha: the consecration that invokes presence into the form, stone until the flag is raised. Civic temple: Puri’s vast kitchen, Tirupati’s feeding, tanks, stages, granaries, archives.
Ch 12+: Any four samskaras: jatakarma, namakarana, annaprashana, vidyarambha, upanayana, vivaha, antyeshti. Vrata = time-bound, costly, witnessed commitment, exactly what behavior science finds effective.
Ch 13+: Karna gave every treasure except food. And learned that treasure delights but food sustains life: annadanam ranks first.
Ch 14+: Gurukula methods confirmed: spaced daily recitation (spaced repetition), chanting aloud (multi-sensory encoding), backward patterns (structural rehearsal), teaching juniors (the protege effect).
Ch 15+: Virochana: ‘the body is the Self’, homework abandoned at the first attractive answer. Indra turned back because the reflected self fails when the body fails, and kept asking for 101 years.
Ch 16+: Shatkas: karma (1–6), bhakti (7–12), jnana (13–18). Krishna’s method: meet the crisis first, reason in the student’s vocabulary, welcome objections, show when words end (ch. 11), verify understanding, hand back the choice.
Ch 17+: Tesla, 1896: fascinated by prana/akasha, promised to demonstrate energy–matter equivalence mathematically, never completed (that equation arrived in 1905). After Harvard: sounded out for a chair in Eastern philosophy; declined as a sannyasi.
Ch 18+: Vada = for truth (engage); jalpa = for victory (decline); vitanda = for demolition (walk away). Women, three layers: the shruti’s roster (rishikas, Gargi, Maitreyi, Bharati) → honest concession of later social wrongs → reformers arguing from the tradition’s own texts.
Ch 19+: Isha 1: all this is dwelt in by the Lord, enjoy by renouncing; covet nothing. Ashramas: brahmacharya (learn), grihastha (build & carry), vanaprastha (loosen & mentor), sannyasa (release).
Ch 20+: Puja as hospitality: avahana = the welcome, seat/water/bath = the guest’s comforts, naivedya = the meal (returned as prasada), visarjana = the honored farewell. Japa: beads occupy the hand, mantra houses the mind, the count gives a finish line.
